When people think of Erasmus exchange, travelling, parties and discovering new cultures comes to their minds. But many students who decide to study abroad are really kind-hearted and find enjoyment in helping others. Can you imagine a wonderful week filled with plenty of charity events and, at the same time, really great fun? Here it comes - SocialErasmus Week! From November 7 until November 13, foreign and local students had the chance to attend some of the best events in Krakow!
First social happening, ‘Create Happiness’, took place on Monday afternoon. People from different countries met at Forum Przestrzenie to create colourful birthday cards for a 10-year old boy named Tobiasz. This little fan of Star Wars and dinosaurs suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and we really wanted to support him and make him really happy! We are proud to announce, that the mission has been acomplished!
On Tuesday our goal was to emphasize the anti-racist attitude by imprinting handprints in a variety of colours on a large canvas. We tried to express, that no matter who we are, where we come from or what we believe in, we are all equal. One of the scientists said: „We are humans. We are individuals but we live in a society.” This statement meets our belief about Unity In Diversity.
During the third day of SocialErasmus week, we visited ‘Wigor’ Senior’s Club in order to spend some time with the elderly and to entertain them. Our friend from Vietnam shared some interesting details about his home country and its culture. It turned out to be a charming time and a valuable contact of two completely different generations. We were extremely happy, that we could learn from each other and exchange our points of view, and it is crucial to remember, that everybody, regardless of age has the need to meet other people, talk to them and be considered an important member of our community.
Finally, it is time to tell you about the best event of the whole SocialErasmus week! On Thursday evening, the famous Erasmus Date Auction took place in the magnificent Shine Club. The main goal of the event was to collect money for the charity foundation ‘Center for Myeloma Treatment’ by bidding dates with the exchange students, as well as the Polish ones. Can you believe, that one student who proved to be an exceptional violinist, was ‘sold’ for almost 550 PLN? That was incredible! When the main show ended, we had the opportunity to listen to rock band EDER and then had fun during the after-party. Apart from having had amazing fun at the event, we are very happy to announce, that a new record was broken! Thanks to YOU, during the event we collected as much as 7231 PLN! The whole amount of money was given to the charity foundation! Helping other gives you a lot of satisfaction, doesn’t it ?
Finally, at the end of SocialErasmus week, we prepared something extraordinary! During ‘You Don’t Need Eyes To See’ event, all of the participants had the opportunity to feel how it is not to be able to use your eyes. After time spent in Sukiennice Museum, we all agreed that it was a precious experience, which made us more aware of disability.
Unfortunately, SocialErasmus week is over now. However, we strongly believe, that these kind of activities help us become better human beings, because when it comes to what really matters, we are all the same!
